Description of the design:
In 2026, Luxembourg will issue a commemorative 2-euro coin celebrating the 40th anniversary of the awarding of the International Charlemagne Prize to the people of Luxembourg. This prestigious European award was presented to the people of Luxembourg on May 8, 1986, in the Coronation Hall of Aachen City Hall.
The Charlemagne Prize honors individuals and institutions that have made an outstanding contribution to European unification. In 1986, it was exceptionally awarded to the entire population of Luxembourg to honor its unwavering commitment to bringing peoples closer together, to European cooperation, and to the building of a united Europe.
This distinction also recognized the Grand Duchy’s historic role in the European project. Despite its small size, Luxembourg is one of the six founding members of the European Communities, and several of its political leaders have played an active role in the development of the European institutions. The upper part of the coin’s inner field bears the inscription “PEUPLE LUXEMBOURGEOIS.” The lower part features the inscription “CHARLEMAGNE PRIZE 1986” and the year “2026,” establishing a direct link between the historic award and its 40th anniversary.
Minted by the Monnaie de Paris, the coin features the cornucopia, the French mint’s emblem. Its outer ring is adorned with the twelve stars of the European flag, symbols of unity, solidarity, and harmony among the peoples of the continent.
This issue is the second Luxembourg 2-euro commemorative coin scheduled for 2026. With its resolutely European theme, it pays tribute to the commitment of Luxembourg and its people to the integration of the continent.
