Description of the design:
In 2026, Luxembourg will issue a commemorative 2-euro coin dedicated to the 45th birthday of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume, born on November 11, 1981. This issue also commemorates his accession to the throne, which took place on October 3, 2025, following the abdication of Grand Duke Henri.
The inner part of the coin features a portrait of the new sovereign in a composition designed to reflect his dual status as Grand Duke and Head of State of Luxembourg. This design marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Grand Duchy while affirming the continuity of the dynasty and the country’s monarchical institutions.
At the top appears the Luxembourgish inscription “GROUSSHERZOG GUILLAUME VU LËTZEBUERG,” meaning “Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg.” The name of the issuing country and the year “2026” complete the national design.
Since the coin is struck by the Monnaie de Paris, it features the cornucopia, the historic mint mark of the French institution. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag, symbolizing unity and solidarity among the member states of the European Union.
With its theme that is both dynastic and historical, this issue holds a special place in Luxembourg’s 2026 numismatic program. It is the first commemorative coin to directly link Grand Duke Guillaume’s birthday to his accession to the throne.
Minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, the coin bears the mint mark “KNM,” standing for Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt
