Pietro Vannucci, also known as Perugino, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in 1446 in Città della Pieve, Umbria, and died in 1523 in Fontignano. He was one of the most important artists of his time, recognized for his mastery of perspective, light and color.
He began his career in Perugia as an apprentice in the workshop of a local master, then worked in Florence and Rome, where he was influenced by the works of contemporaries such as Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
Perugino produced many important works, including the fresco of Christ Handing the Keys to St. Peter in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican and the Madonna and Child, St. Sebastian and St. John the Baptist in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence. His works were appreciated for their harmony and beauty, as well as for the emotional depth they conveyed.
Perugino also taught art to many artists, including the famous Raphael, who was one of his students in Perugia. His influence on Italian Renaissance art was considerable, and his works have continued to inspire artists over the centuries.
The Madonna and Child, Saint Sebastian and Saint John the Baptist, painted in 1493, is an oil-on-wood painting commissioned by Cornelia Salviati, widow of the Florentine merchant Giovanni Martini, for the chapel of the convent church of San Domenico in Fiesole. Restored in 1995, it is an authentic masterpiece of balanced color, light and perspective.
