2 Euro "Belle Epreuve" Saint Marin 2026 - 800th Anniversary of the Death of Saint Francis of Assisi
Description:
The 2026 San Marino 2-euro coin in BU quality commemorates the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, 1226–2026. This issue pays tribute to a major figure of medieval Christianity, whose message of simplicity, brotherhood, and respect for nature continues to resonate through the centuries.
St. Francis of Assisi: A Legacy of Peace and Simplicity
Born in Assisi around 1181 and died in 1226, Francis was the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, also known as the Franciscans. His ideal was based on a humble life, material simplicity, and concern for others, particularly the most disadvantaged.
His relationship with nature plays an essential role in his spiritual legacy. Animals and the living world become an expression of a brotherhood that transcends human relationships. By celebrating this anniversary, San Marino honors a message of peace and reconciliation that gives full depth to the theme of this coin.
The Wolf of Gubbio, a Symbol of Trust and Brotherhood
The national side depicts the muzzle of the Wolf of Gubbio reaching toward the hand of Saint Francis. This design evokes the tradition that the saint pacified a wolf feared by the townspeople: an encounter that has come to symbolize dialogue and reconciliation.
The outstretched hand and the animal’s posture visually convey the transition from fear to trust. The Franciscan cord with three knots, accompanied by branches and flowers, completes the design and recalls the ideal of simplicity associated with the saint.
The inscriptions “SAN MARINO, ” “FRANCESCO D’ASSISI,” and “1226–2026” identify the issuing country and the anniversary being commemorated.
