2 Euro Vatican 2011 - 26th World Youth Day
Coin design:
The national side, designed by Orietta Rossi, depicts young people and flags. It bears the year 2011, mintmark R, the inscriptions XXVI and G.M.G. for Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù, and CITTÀ DEL VATICANO. The twelve European stars appear on the outer ring.
Historical and cultural context:
The European flag was adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955 and later taken up by the European Communities in 1985. Its twelve stars symbolise unity and solidarity rather than a number of states, which explains why the design has remained unchanged through successive enlargements.
