3 Euro Austria 2024 - Yellow Stingray

A fish with many talents, the yellow stingray moves through the water with an unmistakable undulating motion, glows green when exposed to ultraviolet light, and has a venomous, painful barb on its tail. But don’t worry—by shining an ultraviolet light on the ninth coin in theLuminous Marine Lifeseries, you can safely recreate this spectacular phenomenon at home.
The yellow stingray’s green glow is the result of its ability to reflect light using endogenous substances. The function of this luminescence is unclear, but the yellow stingray may use it to communicate with others of its kind and as a form of camouflage. The yellow stingray, which measures no more than 75 centimeters in length, is able to monitor its surroundings thanks to its eyes, located at the highest point of its flat, nearly circular body. Another defensive feature is the sharp, dagger-shaped spine covered with venomous skin, located far behind its tail. Used for self-defense, the yellow stingray proves very useful when held in a shark’s jaws, as it whips its tail at lightning speed and stings its attacker.Coin Design:The twelve magical sea creatures from theLuminous Marine Lifeseriesare depicted in silhouette on the obverse of the coin. Air bubbles rise between them, and a caudal fin disappears beneath the waves on the right. On the reverse side of the coin, a wide band reminiscent of an old-fashioned porthole frames an underwater scene with a yellow stingray at its center. A pair of tropical fish and a tubular sponge can be seen in the background.Along with the other coins in theLuminous Marine Lifeseries, theYellow Stingrayaims to vividly showcase the beauty and vitality of the underwater world.
