2 Euro Lithuania 2020 - Colline des Croix
The Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage site near the town of Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. Here you'll find crucifixes, statues of the Virgin Mary and numerous crosses brought by Catholic pilgrims.
During the years 1944-1990, when Lithuania was officially part of the USSR, Lithuanians continued to visit the Hill to make offerings and show their attachment to their identity, religion and roots. So, despite the Soviets' determination to remove the new crosses and bulldoze the site, new ones continued to appear. In 1985, the Soviet authorities gave up removing the crosses.
Today, there are 150,000 crosses on the site, reminding visitors of a people's struggle for their country's freedom.
On September 7, 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of the Crosses, declaring it a site of hope, peace, love and sacrifice.
