25 x 2-euro roll, France 2026 – 400th Anniversary of the French Navy

The 2026 France 2-euro coin—400th Anniversary of the French Navy —pays tribute to one of the oldest and most iconic institutions in French history. Through this commemorative issue, the Monnaie de Paris celebrates four centuries of maritime commitment, national defense, and France’s presence on the world’s oceans.

A major turning point in the history of the French Navy came in 1626, when Cardinal Richelieu restructured the naval organization of the Kingdom of France. This political decision marked the beginning of an institutionalized navy, designed to strengthen France’s maritime power and protect the country’s interests. Under Louis XIV, the fleet underwent major expansion and gradually established itself as one of Europe’s most powerful navies.

Over the centuries, the French Navy played a role in pivotal historical events. The victory at Chesapeake Bay in 1781 illustrates its strategic role in the American Revolution, while the Revolutionary and Imperial periods highlight the challenges it faced against the Royal Navy. In the 20th century, the Navy was reborn during World War II, notably through the involvement of the Free French Naval Forces and their participation in liberation operations.

The transition to the nuclear age then marked a decisive turning point. With the development of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines and the commissioning of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, France asserted its capacity for global projection of power, deterrence, and intervention. Even today, the French Navy plays an essential role in protecting French interests, securing maritime routes, combating terrorism, monitoring oceanic spaces, and conducting international operations.

The design of this 2026 France commemorative 2-euro coin features a sailor seen from behind, wearing a sailor’s jacket and the famous “bâchi”—the iconic headgear of French sailors. Surrounding this central figure are various ships and aircraft, symbolizing the diversity of assets used by the French Navy: surface vessels, submarines, naval aviation, and specialized units. This composition pays tribute both to the institution’s history and to the men and women who bring it to life every day.

The coin also bears the inscription “RF”(for the French Republic), as well as the official hallmarks and the year 2026. These elements place the coin within the tradition of French commemorative issues while emphasizing the official nature of this numismatic creation.
