The inner part of the coin depicts the most famous view of Neuschwanstein Castle, with the gatehouse in the foreground and the medieval-style towers and turrets with the mountain in the background. Beneath the monument is the name of the land BAYERN, on the left the initials of the engraver Erich Ott and on the right, the workshop mark represented by one of the letters A, D, F, G or J.
- The outer ring features the twelve stars of the European Union, with the year 2011 at the bottom and the letter D at the top.
- This coin is the seventh in a series of 16 €2 coins commemorating the German Länder
