Description:
Coincard 2 Euro Belgium2021-Belgian-Luxembourg Economic Union
After the First World War, Belgium and Luxembourg created the Union économique belgo-luxembourgeoise, abbreviated BLEU, as a customs union, with the association of the Belgian and Luxembourg francs as one of the most important measures. The exchange rates of the two currencies were the same from the end of the Second World War until they were replaced by the euro in 2002.
The treaty establishing the UEBL was signed in Brussels on July 25, 1921. On May 23, 1935, the UEBL Treaty was supplemented by three other treaties, themselves amended in 1963: (a) the Treaty on Financial and Monetary Affairs; (b) the Agreement Establishing a Common Regime for Regulating Imports, Exports and Transit; (c) the Treaty Establishing a Special Revenue Community with Respect to Excise Duties on Alcohol.
A new UEBL agreement was signed in 2002, and published in the Moniteur Belge on January 6, 2005. The new text aims to bring the provisions of the UEBL into line with those of the European Union, but also to take account of the new division of powers in the Belgian federal state. The new treaty has therefore been co-signed by the three Belgian Regions. It also extends the scope of Belgian-Luxembourg cooperation beyond the economic sphere, by providing for enhanced cooperation within international institutions and intensifying relations in the fields of development aid, defense and peacekeeping.
In honor of this lasting and peaceful alliance, the Royal Mint of Belgium has released a new 2 euro coin. The 2 euro coin features a double portrait of King Philippe I of Belgium and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on the right. They are looking at the outlines of Belgium and Luxembourg, the allies of the Belgo-Luxembourg Economic Union. The coin is packaged in an international coin card emphasizing the connection of the two countries through the 100-year alliance.
