Description:

2 Euro Belgium 2021-500 years of Charles V's first coins

On February 24, 1500, Charles V was born at the Court of the Princes of Ghent. From then until his death in 1558, the young prince was to become one of the greatest rulers of all time. At the age of fifteen, he became Lord of the Netherlands, a year later King of Spain and, before his twentieth birthday, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

In 1521, the Carolus gold florin made its debut. A silver Carolus florin followed later, in 1540. After Charles V's abdication in favor of his son Philip in 1566, his coin was never minted again...Until now!

In 1521, Charles V introduced a gold florin of 20 pence, a new unit of account: the florin carolus. In 1543, a silver florin carolus was also introduced. After Charles V's abdication, the coins were no longer minted. However, the florin (carolus) remained in use for a long time in the Netherlands as a term and unit of account.

On the right-hand side of the coin is a bust of Emperor Charles V (Carolus V) looking to the left. He is wearing his typical Renaissance velvet beret and fur-trimmed toga. Around his neck hangs the chain with the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He is looking at the gilded Carolus Gulden, the coin celebrating its 5th centenary. On the left are the country designation BE and the year 2021.Text: CAROLUS V.

Under the Royal Netherlands Mint difference (the mercury rod), the Mint Commissioner's difference (the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele) and LL (the initials of designer Luc Luycx).
