2 Euro Malta 2022 - Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni
Drawing description:
The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni in Malta is a large structure dug into the ground with multiple chambers or rooms. It is a unique example of a prehistoric underground cemetery1 built between 4,100 and 2,500 BC.
The site comprises some fifty chambers on around 2,500 m2 spread over four levels8. The primitive ground level, with the restoration of the entrance to the hypogeum, the first level, at around - 3 m, includes the first chambers dated to the Żebbuġ phase (4,100-3,800 BC J.-C.) and the expansions of the Ġgantija phase (3,600-3,000 BC J.-C.). The second level, at around -6 m, with the finest rooms, then the third level, at just over -10 m, date from the Tarxian phase (3,000-2,500 BC)
At the end of the 19th century, the development of military shipyards attracted a large number of farmers to the Paola area near Marsa to become workers. The area, then known as Tal-Għerien (Maltese for "caves"), became a hotbed of construction, suggesting a long-standing popular knowledge of the area.
In the center of the coin, the representation of Ħal Saflieni's hypogeum, the name of the issuing country MALTA (in French "MALTE"), the year 2022 and the initials NGB of engraver Noel Galea Bason; on the crown, the twelve emblematic European five-pointed stars point upwards.
