Description:
This coin commemorates the fact that on September 6, 1522, three years and 14 days after her departure and 37,753 nautical miles sailed (69,918 km), the Nao Victoria commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the greatest maritime adventure in the history of navigation: the first circumnavigation of the globe.
The first circumnavigation of the globe was a feat that had immediate repercussions in many fields: trade, communications, botany and zoology, cartography, and of course, it proved that the earth was round.
On the obverse, in the center of the coin and against a globe background, is a portrait of Juan Sebastián Elcano, taken from the painting held by Madrid's Naval Museum, with the captions "1519 1522", "JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO" and "PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME" (Latin for "You were the first to sail around me") in capital letters at the bottom. On the left, the mintmark; on the right, in capital letters, the legend "España" and the mint year 2022. The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European Union.
