In 2005, Spain celebrated the 400th anniversary of the first edition of Don Quixote de la Mancha, published in 1605. Written by Miguel de Cervantes, this major work of Spanish literature has become one of the great symbols of the country’s cultural heritage.
To mark this 400th anniversary, Spain chose Don Quixote as the theme for its first commemorative 2-euro coin. This issue pays tribute to Miguel de Cervantes and his most iconic character.
The national design depicts Don Quixote holding a lance in front of several windmills. On the left is the inscription “ESPAÑA,” accompanied by the mark of the Royal Spanish Mint. The year “2005” appears at the bottom.
With a mintage of 8,000,000 coins, this issue is one of the iconic coins from the early days of the Spanish 2-euro commemorative series.
