2 Euro Estonia 2021 - The Wolf
Description of the design:
The wolf was designated Estonia’s national animal in 2018. A prominent figure in the country’s folklore, folk tales, and forested landscapes, it symbolizes both the wild and endurance, as well as the deep connection between Estonian culture and its environment.
The design combines the silhouette of a wolf with a forest landscape. The Latin inscription “CANIS LUPUS” identifies the species, while the country’s name and the year of issue frame a deliberately understated composition centered on the animal and its habitat.
The “Wolf” theme highlights the connection between national identity, territories, and natural or artisanal heritage. By choosing a design rooted in a landscape, a tradition, or an iconic species, the coin serves as a medium for conveying a heritage that is sometimes less well-known than major monuments or historical figures.
The design of “The Wolf” emphasizes organic, territorial, or artisanal forms that contrast with the portraits and monuments frequently featured on commemorative 2-euro coins. This diversity serves as a reminder that a country’s heritage also includes its landscapes, species, craftsmanship, and regional traditions.
Issued as part of the series of commemorative 2-euro coins, this coin retains its status as a coin intended for circulation while featuring a national design specific to the year 2021. It thus links a national theme to a form of currency common to all eurozone countries and facilitates chronological or thematic interpretations of the coin series.
This issue adds a new dimension to series that typically focus on historical figures and political anniversaries. It highlights living, regional, or artisanal heritage and serves as a valuable addition to a thematic collection dedicated to regional and natural identities.
Mintage: 1,000,000 pieces.
