Description:
All European Union countries using the euro are issuing a €2 commemorative coin in 2012 to mark the 10th anniversary of euro bills and coins.
The design in the center of the coin symbolizes the place acquired in ten years by the euro, which is now a global player in its own right, and its importance in everyday life, with different aspects depicted: citizens (represented by a family of four), commerce (the boat), industry (the factory) and energy (the wind turbines). The design was created by Helmut Andexlinger, a professional graphic artist at the Austrian Mint. The outer ring of the coin represents the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception is Luxembourg, where the law requires the Grand Duke's portrait to appear on all coins, so it will appear as a watermark in the middle of the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the Head of State (King or Queen) to appear on all coins has been amended to take part in this commemoration, although this amendment is only valid for common issues.
