Malta 2015 €2 – European Flag
Coin design:
The European flag consists of a circle of twelve gold stars on a blue background. It was adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955 and later by the European Communities in 1985.
The twelve stars do not represent the number of member states; they symbolise unity, harmony and solidarity, and the design has remained unchanged through successive enlargements.
The common 2015 commemorative issue marks thirty years since the European institutions adopted the flag.
Historical and cultural context:
The European flag, consisting of a circle of twelve gold stars on a blue background, was adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955 and later taken up by the European Communities in 1985.
