The second special coin issued by Finland in 2024 celebrates the country's remarkable architecture, highlighting the significant contributions of the architectural firm of Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. This trio of architects left their mark on Finnish architecture through their fruitful if brief collaboration, leaving behind iconic buildings that are now revered both nationally and internationally.
Among the office's most notable achievements is the National Museum of Finland, distinguished by its stylistic references to medieval Finland and its innovative use of romantic national motifs. Hvitträsk, the architects' former studio and residence, is another masterpiece, representative of the national Romantic style, incorporating local natural elements and traditional craft techniques. Tallberg's house and the Finnish pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair also illustrate their ability to fuse functionality and aesthetics, characteristic of Finnish architecture at the time.
With their innovative design and harmonious integration into the Finnish landscape, these buildings are not only functional spaces, but also symbols of Finland's cultural and artistic identity. The 2024 commemorative coin pays tribute to this era of architectural flowering and its illustrious architects, whose works continue to influence and inspire the field of architecture far beyond Finland's borders.
