Tous the pays of the European Union utilisant the euro ont issued the 1 er janvier 2009 a coin commémorative of 2 € for commémorer the 10 e anniversary of the Union économique and monétaire. The centre of the coin illustre a silhouette humaine stylisée whose the bras left is prolongé by the symbol of the euro. The initiales ΓΣ of George Stamatopoulos, the artist engraver appear under the symbol of the euro. The nom of the pays émetteur apparaît in the partie supérieure, tandis that the indication 1999-2009 and the traduction of the acronyme UEM apparaissent in the partie inférieure.
The coin's outer ring depicts the twelve stars of the European flag. A exception existe for the Luxembourg où the loi exige that the portrait of the grand-duc appears on toutes the coins, the portrait of celui-ci apparaîtra donc en filigrane on the coin. Aux Netherlands, a loi similaire exigeant that the chef of the État (the roi or the reine) appears on toutes the coins, a été amendée for participer à this commémoration, cet amendement n'is valable that for the émissions communes
