The coin bears the acronym "RI" for the Italian Republic, as well as the dates "1873-2023" representing the year of Manzoni's death and the coin's vintage. The inscription "ALESSANDRO MANZONI" also appears in an arc to the left of the portrait.
To the right of the portrait, the marks "R" and "AV" designate the Mint of Rome and designer Antonio Vecchio respectively. The outer ring of the coin is decorated with the twelve stars of the European flag.
