It's interesting to see how the sunflower has become a symbol of peace in Ukraine, in addition to its economic importance as the country's main crop and export.
Artist Krišs Salmanis, who designed the national side of the coin, is also known for his graphic design of the coin "Kārlis Zāle". Jānis Strupulis created the plaster model of the coin, while artist Luc Luycx designed the common side of the coin. Interestingly, the coin's material and size are identical to those of the other 2 euro coins in circulation.
The national side of the coin features a sunflower, a symbol of the Ukrainian people in their struggle for peace. The inscription "SLAVA UKRAINAI!" (Glory to Ukraine!) also appears on the coin, along with the name of the country (LATVIJA) and the year of issue (2022). The coin was minted by UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla, a mint based in Lithuania.
The coin's design reflects both the importance of the sunflower in Ukraine and international solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their quest for peace.
