2 Euro Latvia 2024 - Himmeli Winter Solstice
Description:
Himmeli is a traditional handmade decoration from the Nordic countries, particularly popular in Finland. The term comes from the Swedish word himmel, meaning "heaven" or "paradise". Himmeli are lightweight geometric structures, usually made from straw, reeds or, more recently, metal tubes or paper. They are often suspended from the ceiling, where they gently rotate with the movement of the air.
Historically, Himmeli were used as ornaments for winter solstice or Christmas celebrations, symbolizing the prosperity and abundance to come in the new year. In rural areas, these ornaments were also hung over tables to ensure good harvests.
Himmeli is a geometric art form. It can be conceived as a simple polyhedral form or developed into complex structures with repetitive motifs. Today, it is also appreciated for its minimalist, contemporary aesthetic, often used as an element of interior design.
