Latvia has five historic regions: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Sēlija. First mentioned in the 13th century, Sēlija was not officially recognized as a cultural and historical region until 2021, when it was included in the Law on Historic Regions of Latvia.
The carmine, white and moss-green flag and coat of arms of Sēlija were approved in 2023. Created by heraldic artist Edgars Sims, the coat of arms now appears on the reverse of the 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the region.
Inspired by the historic duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale, the coat of arms features an ancient symbol in the form of an elk or a stag. The State Heraldry Commission defined the principles of this unique coat of arms, created in close collaboration with the inhabitants, municipalities and civic organizations of Sēlija.
The enthroned animal, a silver stag on a red background, embodies the nobility, strength and pride of the region. Its posture, with head held high and refined antlers, reflects the dignity and cultural identity of Sēlija.
This design marks the completion of the series of commemorative €2 coins dedicated to Latvia's five historic regions, celebrating the unity and diversity of Latvia's heritage.
