all the country of the European Union utilisant the euro have issued the 1er janvier 2009 a coin commemorative of 2 € for commemorate the 10e anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union.
The centre of the coin depicts a stylised human figure whose left arm is extended by the euro symbol. The initials ΓΣ of George Stamatopoulos, the engraver-artist, appear below the euro symbol. The name of the issuing country appears in the upper part, while the indication 1999-2009 and the traduction of the acronyme UEM appear in the lower part. The coin’s outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception exists for Luxembourg, where the law requires the portrait of the Grand Duke to appear on all coins, so his portrait appears as a watermark on the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the head of state (king or queen) to appear on all coins was amended to allow participation in this commemoration; this amendment applies only to common issues.
