In 2026, Portugal will celebrate the centennial of Rotary’s presence in the country with the issuance of a commemorative 2-euro coin titled “Rotary – 100 Years in Portugal.” Set to enter circulation on July 15, 2026, the coin pays tribute to a century of volunteer service to the Portuguese community.
Rotary International is a global humanitarian organization founded in 1905 in Chicago. Its network brings together volunteers and professionals who use their skills to support projects focused on health, education, poverty alleviation, access to clean water, and the promotion of peace.
The Rotary movement took root in Portugal in 1926. Since then, its various clubs have participated in numerous social and charitable initiatives, guided by the values of responsibility, integrity, mutual aid, and cooperation. This commemorative coin thus serves as a reminder of the importance of volunteerism and collective commitment to improving living conditions.
Designed by sculptor and medalist João Duarte, the national side features several stylized human figures surrounding a globe marked by lines of latitude. Two interlocking hands evoke mutual aid and solidarity, while a gear appears in the background. A historic emblem of Rotary, this gear symbolizes work, movement, and the pooling of skills toward a common goal.
At the bottom are the inscriptions “ROTARY,” “PORTUGAL,” and the year “2026,” accompanied by the Portuguese coat of arms, the inscription “CASA DA MOEDA,” and the artist’s name “ESC. JOÃO DUARTE.” The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag.
