2 Euro "Belle Epreuve" Portugal 2026 - 70th Anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
Description:
The 2-euro Portugal 2026 Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of this institution, founded in 1956 in Lisbon. Featuring a design inspired by ancient numismatics, this issue pays tribute to seven decades of commitment to the arts, sciences, education, and philanthropy.
Issued in UNC (Uncirculated) quality, it brings together two closely related themes: the legacy of a great collector and the transmission of cultural heritage to future generations.
Calouste Gulbenkian: A Passion for Collecting and Sharing
An entrepreneur, collector, and philanthropist of Armenian origin, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian devoted part of his life to building an exceptional art collection. Having settled in Lisbon in 1942, he stipulated in his will the creation of a foundation to carry on his legacy after his death.
Established in 1956, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation transformed this personal legacy into a public-facing institution. Its museum houses its founder’s collection, while its activities extend to music, modern art, research, and support for education.
Scholarships, cultural projects, and social initiatives carry forward this mission: to make knowledge accessible and to support personal development. The 2026 commemoration thus celebrates an institution whose impact extends far beyond Portugal’s borders.
An Ancient Quadriga at the Heart of the Design
The national side, designed by Pedro Carvalho, depicts a quadriga—a chariot drawn by four horses—which serves as the Foundation’s emblem. This motif is inspired by a Syracuse decadrachm from Calouste Gulbenkian’s collection and reflects his interest in ancient Greek coins.
The quadriga also symbolizes the institution’s four founding missions: art, philanthropy, science, and education. This connection is particularly evocative for numismatists, as this contemporary coin itself draws inspiration from an ancient coin.
The dates “1956–2026” accompany the design. The Portuguese inscriptions “Arte,” “Beneficência,” “Ciência,” and “Educação” reflect the Foundation’s areas of focus, whose name appears at the top of the design.
