Theme: San Marino €2 commemorative coin 2013 commemorating the 500th anniversary of Pinturicchio's death.
Print run : 110,000
Description:
Born in Perugia, Pinturicchio followed in the footsteps of Perugino, who was commissioned to decorate the Sistine Chapel, and won the esteem of the Curia. Alexander VI commissioned his masterpiece, the famous Borgia Apartments (now the Museum of Modern Religious Art) in the Vatican.
Faithful to the style of the 15th century, Pinturicchio rejected the many artistic innovations of the 1500s. Hence the hostility of Vasari, who credited his short-lived assistant Raphael with the cartoons for his last major project, the Piccolomini Bookshop in Siena, for which the contract was signed in 1502 and work dragged on until 1508. He returned to Rome in 1507 to decorate the choir of Santa Maria del Popolo, before moving on to Siena, where he worked until his death.
