2 Euro commemorative Slovenia 2023 - 150 years since the birth of Josip Plemelj
Description:
Josip Plemelj, a remarkable Slovenian mathematician, made important contributions to complex analysis, functional analysis and mathematical physics. Born on December 11, 1873 in Bled, Slovenia, he was particularly known for his work on integral equations and boundary value problems. His pioneering efforts in these fields were influential in the development of modern mathematical methods. Plemelj's work also included the Plemelj formulas in complex analysis, which are crucial for solving certain types of integral equations. His legacy in mathematics is evident not only in his research, but also in his role as a teacher, where he mentored future mathematicians and promoted the advancement of the mathematical sciences.
The drawing shows parts of the equation that Josip Plemelj was the world's first to solve. Concentric circles dotted with numbers and symbols represent the rotation of the planets and their movement through space, as well as the coexistence of different elements that cannot be dissolved into a whole. The design thus illustrates the two fields in which Josip Plemelj distinguished himself: mathematics and astronomy. The inscription "Josip Plemelj 1873", the name of the issuing country "SLOVENIJA" and the year of issue "2023" are integrated into the design.
