Description :
Commemorative subject : Jacques Cartier
This coin, part of our Great Explorers theme, depicts Jacques Cartier on the obverse and his ship on the reverse. Born probably between June 7 and December 23, 1491 in Saint-Malo, and died in the same city on September 1, 1557, he was a French navigator and explorer. Author of the maps that brought the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River to the surface of the globe, Cartier was the first European to describe and name these waters, their shores and inhabitants, and the territory he visited, which he named Canada .
