Description

Description :
Charles II, known as the Bald, born June 13, 823 in Frankfurt am Main (Germany), died October 6, 877 in Avrieux (Savoy), was one of Charlemagne's grandsons who divided the empire in 843.
He was nicknamed "the Bald" not because he was balding, but because on May 5, 877, the day Pope John VIII consecrated the collegiate church of Sainte-Marie, the future Saint-Corneille abbey in Compiègne, he had his head shaved as a sign of submission to the Church, despite Frankish custom requiring a king to have long hair. It should be noted that Charles had already become lay abbot of Saint-Denis in 867.
