Historical and cultural context:
The Red Cross movement emerged in the nineteenth century from Henri Dunant's efforts to improve the treatment of wounded soldiers. The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in Geneva in 1863, before the first Geneva Convention was adopted in 1864.
