5 Euro Austria 2024 - Leap year
The New Year coin 2024 is a special coin for a very special year. With 366 days instead of the usual 365, 2024 is a leap year, and this limited-edition coin is designed to remind you that the extra day should be appreciated amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The extra day in a leap year keeps the calendar year synchronized with the solar year and therefore with cosmic order. You must accept it as a celestial gift and treat it as an extra piece of good fortune. The extra day is a high-potential day when you can give yourself a little more "me time", devote more time than usual to someone else, or do something you've always wanted to do. Or if you've decided to tackle something completely new between now and the end of the year, why not use the extra day for that? Everyday life tends to demand a lot of us without making concessions, but that's not the case in 2024 when we have an extra day to enjoy it.
The reverse of the nine-sided coin is dedicated to the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to align the calendar with the solar year. Pope Gregory XIII is depicted on the right-hand edge of the coin next to a large human manifestation of the Sun with flaming hair. Below the Sun is the February calendar page showing February 29 - the extra day. At the top is the zodiac sign Pisces, which corresponds to the end of February. The obverse of the coin features the coats of arms of the nine provinces of Austria.
