100 years of the Lithuanian Song Festival
The Song Festival is a jewel of Lithuanian culture, recognized worldwide and celebrated for its ability to unite the voices of the nation. This tradition has gained international renown, helping Lithuania, along with Latvia and Estonia, to be honored on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Since the first Song Festival in Kaunas between 1924 and 1944, participation has exploded, attracting over 3,000 singers, and the event has spread across the country, in different regions and cities, even without the support of official organizations.
During the Soviet era, although the authorities tried to model the Festival of Songs on the success story of socialist Lithuania, subtle and often hidden resistance was maintained. A fraction of those in charge managed to subtly safeguard the essence of this tradition. The repertoire thus continued to be dominated by Lithuanian folk songs, despite the gradual introduction of less ideological themes.
Initially, the Festival of Songs was intended to reinforce Lithuanian identity, becoming a symbol of the country's tradition and independence. Today, the event has diversified to include a variety of performances, from comedy acts to traditional music concerts, culminating in the Day of Songs. On this special day, the stage comes alive with the voices of nearly 10,000 choristers, a truly impressive spectacle that has continued to resonate for a century.
