Conceived and built in the 1920s, the Van Nelle factory is a particularly accomplished example of industrial architecture. It comprises a complex of buildings made up of several factories lined up along a major inland traffic route and close to multiple means of transport (canals, roads, railroads). Based on a reinforced concrete internal structure, the facades of the main buildings are essentially made of glass and steel. Through a deliberate agreement between the contractor and the project's architects and engineers, the Van Nelle factory embodies an ideal factory, open to the outside world, with evolving interior workspaces, and where light is used to enhance comfort at work. The result is a new factory that has become a symbol of the modernist and functionalist architectural culture of the interwar period.
