2 € commemorative Portugal 2014

Theme: 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

Print run : 500,000 copies.

Description:

The so-called "revolution" began as a coup d'état organized by the military, radicalized by the failure of Portugal's colonial war and its human sacrifices. The coup, supported by the people, sparked a revolution that lasted two years and changed the nation's structures politically, economically, socially and culturally. While the overthrow of the regime provoked unanimous enthusiasm, the days that followed were to reveal deep divisions over the way forward.

The Carnation Revolution was unique in that the military toppled a regime without establishing an authoritarian one. They were in fact the bearers of a democratic project: the establishment of a civilian government, the organization of free elections and decolonization. The end of what was known as the Estado Novo, the Salazarist regime, enabled the country to emerge from its isolation.

This event was part of the vast democratization movement that would soon affect Spain, Greece, Latin America and, finally, Eastern Europe.
