Sea theme
In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 8 World Oceans Day to promote sustainable behaviors and policies for the planet's marine resources. The oceans cover around two-thirds of the earth's surface and are the very foundation of life. The reverse of the 5 euro coin shows a dolphin diving into the water: the composition reveals the devastating impact of mankind's waste, which pollutes the waters of the seas and poisons the creatures that live there. The obverse of the coin depicts the water's waves straddling the Three Towers and recalling the volutes of the Penne, symbolizing the essentiality of the water element for the ecosystem and human beings.
