San Marino's fauna, although relatively small for the size of the country, offers an interesting diversity. Due to its landlocked location on the Italian peninsula, San Marino's fauna is largely similar to that of Italy.
Mammals include species such as the red fox, European hare, European hedgehog and weasel. Wild boar are also present in certain areas of the Sammarinese countryside. Small rodents such as mice, voles and field mice are also widespread.
As for birds, a variety of species can be found in San Marino's natural landscapes. Common birds such as blackbirds, tits, pigeons and sparrows are common. Birds of prey such as buzzards and falcons can also be seen.
San Marino's fresh waters are home to fish such as common trout, perch and carp. The waterways are also home to a variety of aquatic invertebrates.
Due to San Marino's limited size, human impact and urbanization have reduced natural habitats, which may have affected some native species. Nevertheless, the Sammarinese authorities have implemented conservation measures to preserve the local flora and fauna.
Sammarinese fauna is therefore a combination of typically Mediterranean fauna and species common to Western Europe. Despite its small size, San Marino offers opportunities for nature observation and biodiversity preservation.
