Set BU Greece 2012 - Greek Tourism – Santorini
Set overview:
Official or collector presentation for Set BU Greece 2012 - Greek Tourism – Santorini, bringing together the denominations and/or commemorative coins of the issue.
Set contents: the regular euro denominations from 1 cent to 2 euros.
Designs of the Greek euro series:
The eight Greek denominations illustrate several major aspects of Greek history and culture: the 1 cent coin depicts an ancient trireme, the 2 cent coin a corvette and the 5 cent coin a modern tanker, together forming a maritime theme. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins respectively honour Rigas Feraios, Ioannis Kapodistrias and Eleftherios Venizelos. The €1 coin reproduces the famous owl from an ancient Athenian coin, while the €2 coin depicts Europa being abducted by Zeus in the form of a bull.
Historical and cultural context:
The first major issue in the Greek tourism series, the 2012 set highlights Santorini. The Cycladic island is famous for its volcanic caldera, villages with traditional architecture and the prehistoric site of Akrotiri, a major witness to Cycladic civilisation.
Mintage: 20,000 sets.
Quality: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU).
