Theme 2025 Biodiversity Wych Elm
Wych elm (Ulmus glabra), also known as mountain elm, is a valuable native species for biodiversity. In summer, this vigorous tree provides shelter and food for numerous animal species, including insects, birds and small mammals. However, elm disease, caused by the fungus Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, has led to a significant decline in elm populations in Europe, affecting associated ecosystems. Despite this threat, the Wych elm continues to play an essential role in preserving forest biodiversity.
