All European Union countries using the euro issue a €2 commemorative coin in 2012 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of euro banknotes and coins.
The design at the centre of the coin symbolises the position gained by the euro in ten years, now a fully fledged global player, and its importance in everyday life. Different aspects are depicted: citizens (represented by a family of four), trade (the ship), industry (the factory) and energy (the wind turbines). The design was created by Helmut Andexlinger, a professional designer at the Austrian Mint. The coin’s outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception exists for Luxembourg, where the law requires the portrait of the Grand Duke to appear on all coins, so his portrait appears as a watermark in the middle of the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the head of state (king or queen) to appear on all coins was amended to allow participation in this commemoration; this amendment applies only to common issues.
