2 € commemorative coin Italy 2013 commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi was an Italian Romantic composer, born on October 10 , 1813 in Roncole and died on January 27 , 1901 in Milan. His work, composed mainly ofoperas that combine melodic power with psychological and legendary depth, is one of the most important in the history of musical theater.

Verdi was one of the most influentialItalian opera composers of the 19th century, with an influence comparable to that of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini in the second half of the century. His works are frequently performed in opera houses around the world, and some of his themes have long been part of popular culture beyond the boundaries of the genre, such as " La donna è mobile " from Rigoletto, the "Brindisi" from La traviata, the " Va, pensiero " chorus from Nabucco, the "Coro di zingari" from Il trovatore and the "Marche triomphale" fromAida. Verdi's operas still dominate theoperatic repertoire a century and a half after their creation.

Visionary and politically committed, he remains, alongside Garibaldi and Cavour, an emblematic figure in the Risorgimento, the process of reunification of the Italian peninsula.
