Theme: 2 € commemorative EMU Italy 2009.
Circulation : 2,500,000
Description:
On January1, 2009, all European Union countries using the euro issued a €2 commemorative coin to mark the 10th anniversary ofEconomic and Monetary Union.
The center of the coin features a stylized human figure whose left arm is extended by the euro symbol. The initials ΓΣ of George Stamatopoulos, the engraving artist, appear below the euro symbol. The name of the issuing country appears in the upper part, while the indication 1999-2009 and the translation of the EMU acronym appear in the lower part. The outer ring of the coin represents the twelve stars of the European flag.
An exception is Luxembourg, where the law requires the portrait of the Grand Duke to appear on all coins, so the Grand Duke's portrait will appear as a watermark on the coin. In the Netherlands, a similar law requiring the Head of State (King or Queen) to appear on all coins has been amended to take part in this commemoration, although this amendment is only valid for common issues.
