Description: The inner part of the coin depicts a hand tactilely reading an open book.
Above the index finger, which points to the vertical inscription LOUIS BRAILLE 1809-2009, two birds symbolize the freedom of knowledge. The issuing country RI appears at top right, and the mint R at bottom right. Below the book, Braille's name is written in the alphabet he invented. At the bottom, the initials MCC of the artist Maria Carmela Colanéri.
The outer ring of the coin represents the twelve stars of the European flag.
- Louis Braille, born on January 4, 1809 in Coupvray (near Paris), died on January 6, 1852, and invented the Braille writing system for the blind and partially sighted.
