Theme: Government autonomy in 1921
Description :
After competing for colonial favors with the French and English (in particular), the British Empire colonized the island of Malta during the 19th century and gradually annexed it to its empire. However, the growing power of Maltese nationalists forced the British to grant the future country a new constitution. This new constitution (1921) allowed a majority of Maltese to be elected to the Legislative Council. Nevertheless, the country remained under British influence until 1964, the date of independence (albeit under the rule of Queen Elizabeth II of England), before electing the first Maltese president 10 years later in 1974.
