2€ Vatican 2022 Belle Epreuve - 125th anniversary of the birth of Pope Paul VI

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Battista Montini, born in Concesio in 1897 and elected Pope in 1963 as Paul VI. The Vatican State Mint is celebrating this anniversary with the bimetallic 2 euro coin in a double shiny uncirculated and numismatic proof version. The coin shows the Pope smiling and opening his arms wide in the gesture he often used to greet crowds. He wears a cassock tied at the waist with a fascia bearing the coat of arms of his pontificate embroidered on the bottom, his cape and cloak. Our artist Daniela Longo created the engraving on the reverse of the piece representing the tapestry exhibited on the façade of St. Peter's Basilica during the beatification of Paul VI. The celebration took place on October 19, 2014, presided over by Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
