Description:
In 2024, we celebrate the 750th anniversary of the death of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Italian theologian and philosopher whose work, notably the "Summa Theologica", profoundly influenced Christian and Western thought. His integration of Aristotelian logic into Christian doctrine marked a major breakthrough, showing that faith and reason can coexist harmoniously.
Recognized for his impact on education, particularly in medieval universities, Thomas Aquinas is studied to this day in a variety of academic fields. Canonized soon after his death and declared a Doctor of the Church, his legacy continues to be celebrated and studied for his contribution to theology, philosophy and ethics.
The 750th anniversary of his death is marked by worldwide events, reflecting his enduring importance to the Christian faith and interfaith dialogue, underlining his relevance to contemporary discussions on morality and the coexistence of different spheres of thought.
The central area of the coin depicts Saint Thomas Aquinas dressed in the robes of the Dominican order, to which he belonged. In his left hand, he holds a copy of his major work, the "Summa Theologica", and in the other a quill pen. A shining sun adorns his chest, symbolizing his vast wisdom. He is often referred to as the "Angelic Doctor", a title that refers to his purity of mind and body, and is inscribed beneath his image. In the background, on the left, a lily, representing chastity, and the church of St. Thomas of Roccasecca, the first shrine dedicated to his memory, stand out. This church was erected following his canonization on July 18, 1323 by Pope John XXII. The inscription "Citta Del Vaticano" and the mintmark symbol "R" curve in a semicircle above the year "1274 - 2024" in the center.
The outer edge of the coin is decorated with the twelve stars of the European Union flag.
