So which are the truly rare 2 euro coins in 2026? Why do some reach values far above their face value? And how can you tell a genuine rarity from an ordinary circulation coin?

Le Comptoir de l'Euro takes stock on the basis of official mintages, the quality of the issues, their availability and the reality of the numismatic market.

What is a rare 2 euro coin?

The rarity of a 2 euro coin does not depend on its year alone.

Several criteria come into play: the number of examples issued, the issuing country, the striking quality, the official packaging, collector demand and the number of examples actually available on the market.

An issue of 500,000 examples can remain fairly accessible, whereas a coin produced in only 10,000 or 15,000 examples and sold exclusively in an official case can quickly become hard to obtain.

The European Central Bank points out that 2 euro commemorative coins have the same characteristics and the same common side as ordinary 2 euro coins. What sets them apart is their commemorative national side. They are legal tender throughout the euro area.

The first 2 euro commemorative coin was issued by Greece in 2004 for the Athens Olympic Games. Since then, issues have multiplied and some have become particularly sought after.

Monaco 2015: the 2 euro coin with an even lower mintage than Grace Kelly

The 2 euro Monaco 2015 coin for the 800th anniversary of the Foundation of the Fortress on the Rock has one of the lowest mintages ever recorded for a Monegasque 2 euro commemorative: only 10,000 examples.

The European Central Bank confirms this exceptionally small issue volume. The coin was issued in November 2015 and shows a tower at the top of the Rock, with the inscription "Fondation de la Forteresse".

In terms of number of examples, it is therefore rarer than the famous Grace Kelly.

On the 2026 market, however, prices can vary widely. A complete example recently sold at auction for around 2,000 €, while prices offered by dealers can be noticeably higher.

This difference perfectly illustrates an essential rule of numismatics: the asking price and the price actually achieved at a sale are not necessarily the same.

Monaco 2007 Grace Kelly: the most famous of the rare 2 euro coins

Whenever rare 2 euro coins are mentioned, one name always comes up: Grace Kelly.

Issued in July 2007 by Monaco to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Grace, this coin bears her portrait on the national side.

Its official mintage is only 20,001 examples, according to the European Central Bank.

This low mintage explains part of its success, but not all of it. Grace Kelly also enjoys an international fame that reaches far beyond the circle of euro collectors. A Hollywood actress who became Princess of Monaco, she remains an iconic figure of the 20th century.

This combination of low mintage, the prestige of Monaco, a world-famous personality and strong international demand has turned the coin into a true numismatic icon.

In 2026, recent auctions show hammer prices ranging from about 2,400 to 3,100 euros, while some dealer estimates sit around 3,200 to 3,700 euros depending on condition and presentation.

Le Comptoir de l'Euro also offers this issue in its category dedicated to Monaco 2 euro commemorative coins, when available.

Monaco 2016: Charles III and the foundation of Monte-Carlo

After the exceptional issue of 2015, Monaco continued its policy of low mintages in 2016.

The coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Monte-Carlo by Charles III.

Only 15,000 examples were issued in proof quality. The ECB confirms this mintage and an issue date of June 2016.

This coin is now one of the great modern Monegasque issues. Prices observed in 2026 are often well above several hundred euros and can exceed 1,000 euros from some dealers.

Monaco 2017: the Prince's Carabinieri

The following year, Monaco issued a new 2 euro commemorative dedicated to the bicentenary of the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince.

The design shows a carabinier in front of the Prince's Palace.

The issue volume was again limited to 15,000 examples.

In 2026, this coin remains in high demand. Depending on the sales channel, there are significant differences, with offers ranging from several hundred euros to more than 1,000 euros.

Subject to availability, this coin is also offered by Le Comptoir de l'Euro, in proof quality in its collector's presentation.

Monaco 2018: François-Joseph Bosio

In 2018, Monaco celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Monegasque sculptor François-Joseph Bosio.

This issue was struck in only 16,000 examples.

The volume therefore remains extremely low compared with the millions of examples produced for some circulation issues.

Bosio is one of the major figures of French neoclassical sculpture. Born in Monaco in 1768, he worked in particular under the First Empire and the Restoration.

The coin thus combines a very small available quantity with the historical prestige of its subject, which explains why it remains among the most sought-after Monegasque issues.

Does Monaco dominate the market for rare 2 euro coins?

Among modern issues, Monaco does indeed hold a special position.

The Principality has a small population and regularly produces its collector coins in quantities that bear no comparison with the large European states.

The situation has been particularly striking since 2015: 10,000 examples for the Fortress, 15,000 for Monte-Carlo in 2016, 15,000 for the Carabinieri in 2017 and 16,000 for Bosio in 2018.

Demand, on the other hand, is international.

It is this imbalance between an extremely small supply and a much larger number of collectors that supports prices.

Not all Monaco 2 euro coins are worth several hundred euros, however. It is essential to distinguish low-mintage collector commemoratives from the ordinary circulation coins bearing the effigy of Prince Albert II.

Monaco 2026 Duchy of Valentinois: a future rare coin?

The new 2 euro Monaco 2026 Duchy of Valentinois follows directly in this policy of limited mintages.

It is produced in only 15,000 examples in proof quality.

The coin pays tribute to the Duchy of Valentinois, a title historically linked to the House of Grimaldi and to the long-standing relations between Monaco and France.

Unlike Grace Kelly or the 2015 Fortress, it is still far too early to predict how its value will evolve in the long term.

A mintage of 15,000 examples is nonetheless an extremely low level by the standards of European issues. In August 2026, dealer prices observed ranged from approximately 240 to 360 euros depending on the seller.

At Le Comptoir de l'Euro, the 2 euro Monaco 2026 Duchy of Valentinois is currently offered in its official proof presentation.

San Marino 2004: Bartolomeo Borghesi

The micro-states did not wait for Monaco to attract collectors.

In 2004, San Marino took part in the 2 euro commemorative programme from its very first year with an issue dedicated to Bartolomeo Borghesi, historian and numismatist.

Only 110,000 examples were issued.

This mintage now seems relatively high next to the 10,000 or 15,000 examples of some Monaco coins, but it remains very low for a 2 euro coin.

Its status as San Marino's first 2 euro commemorative also adds to its historical interest.

Vatican: limited mintages and worldwide demand

The Vatican is the other great micro-state sought after by euro collectors.

In 2005, for example, the 2 euro coin dedicated to the 20th World Youth Day was issued in only 100,000 examples.

These quantities remain very small compared with the millions of coins issued by the large European states.

But the Vatican has one particular feature above all: its coins appeal at once to euro collectors, to numismatists specialising in the Papal States and to an international public attentive to events linked to the various pontificates.

Periods of papal transition, jubilees and Sede Vacante issues can therefore trigger particularly strong demand.

The issues of the 2025 vintage perfectly illustrate this historical dimension, notably with a 2 euro coin dedicated to the Sede Vacante MMXXV. The Governorate of Vatican City State officially presented it among its numismatic issues.

Is a low-mintage coin necessarily worth a lot?

No.

This is one of the most common mistakes when starting a collection.

Mintage is a major criterion, but demand must also exist.

A coin produced in 50,000 examples but sought by 200,000 collectors can rise sharply. Conversely, a coin with a relatively low mintage can stagnate if its theme or country attracts few buyers.

The formation of value can be summed up as follows:

genuine rarity + demand + condition + quality + official presentation + availability on the market = collector value.

This is why Grace Kelly remains so emblematic: its success does not rest on its 20,000 examples alone.

Beware of fake 2 euro coins "worth 10,000 euros"

The internet is full of listings presenting ordinary coins as treasures.

A 2 euro coin offered at 5,000 or 10,000 euros on a classified ads platform is not automatically worth that price.

Any seller can freely set their own price.

To value a coin seriously, you need to compare transactions actually concluded, the prices charged by several recognised dealers, the official mintage, the state of preservation and the presentation of the coin.

You should also be particularly careful with copies and reproductions of prestigious coins such as Grace Kelly 2007 or Monaco Fortress 2015. Their high value has encouraged the appearance of many imitations on marketplaces.

Can you find a rare 2 euro coin in your change?

Yes, but you have to be realistic.

Some commemorative coins intended for circulation can become sought after, and it is always possible to discover an interesting year or issue among your change.

On the other hand, the great Monegasque rarities such as Grace Kelly 2007, the 2015 Fortress or the proof issues of 2016 and 2017 were distributed as collector products. The chances of finding a genuine one by chance in circulation are therefore extremely slim.

An unusual coin found in a purse or wallet is nonetheless always worth identifying before being spent.

How to determine the value of your 2 euro coin

Start by precisely identifying the country, the year and the design.

Then check whether it is an ordinary or a commemorative coin, and look up its official mintage.

Quality is also decisive. An uncirculated UNC coin, a BU coin and a proof coin are not equivalent.

For prestige issues, the presence of the official case, certificate and original sleeve can also have a significant influence on value.

Finally, never rely on a single listing found on the internet. Compare several sources and, when the amounts become significant, seek the opinion of a professional.

Which 2 euro coins to watch in 2026?

Monaco's issues naturally remain the centre of attention because of their very low mintages.

The new 2 euro Monaco 2026 Duchy of Valentinois, limited to 15,000 examples, thus joins a series of Monegasque issues that have become particularly sought after.

The Vatican also deserves special attention because of the exceptional historical context surrounding the 2025 and 2026 issues.

But a 2 euro collection should not be limited to the most expensive coins. San Marino, Andorra, Malta, Finland, Luxembourg and many other countries have produced fascinating issues, some of which remain affordable.

So which is the rarest 2 euro coin?

If we reason purely in terms of official mintage among the major commemoratives presented here, Monaco 2015 Foundation of the Fortress, with its 10,000 examples, comes ahead of Grace Kelly.

But in terms of fame and as a symbol of the 2 euro market, Grace Kelly 2007 unquestionably remains the benchmark.

This is what makes numismatics so fascinating: the coin with the lowest mintage is not always the best known, nor necessarily the one that will fetch the highest price.

The market is the meeting point of rarity, history and collectors' desire.
