The year 2026 marks a major milestone in Luxembourg’s monetary history with the introduction of a new series of circulation coins bearing the effigy of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume. From the 1-cent coin to the 2-euro coin, all eight denominations feature a completely redesigned national side following his accession to the throne on October 3, 2025.
Designed by Italian artist Chiara Principe, the new designs combine the sovereign’s official portrait with the main symbols of Luxembourg’s identity. In accordance with numismatic tradition following a change of reign, Grand Duke Guillaume is depicted facing left—the opposite direction from his predecessor, Grand Duke Henri.
The series consists of three distinct designs, tailored to the different denominations. The 1-, 2-, and 5-cent coins feature a partial effigy of the Grand Duke accompanied by a stylized representation of the national flag. On the 10-, 20-, and 50-cent denominations, the sovereign’s full portrait faces the Luxembourg flag, whose colors are suggested by a set of hatched lines.
The 1- and 2-euro coins feature a more solemn design. The profile portrait of Grand Duke Guillaume is paired with a contemporary interpretation of the Luxembourg Lion, the Grand Duchy’s historic emblem. The vertical inscription “LËTZEBUERG,” the year 2026, and the twelve stars of the European Union complete the design. The artist’s initials, “CP,” appear below the sovereign’s collar. This new series represents much more than a simple graphic evolution. It marks the transition to a new reign while affirming institutional continuity, national unity, and Luxembourg’s commitment to European integration. The eight coins bearing the year 2026 were gradually put into circulation starting on July 13, 2026, while coins bearing the effigy of Grand Duke Henri remain legal tender.
