3 Euro Austria 2025 Unc - Nudibranc
The eleventh coin in the Underwater Life series, this Austrian 3 euro issue for 2025 features the nudibranch dorididae, a fascinating marine animal. This series of twelve coins, launched between 2022 and 2025 at the rate of one every quarter, each presents a marine animal with extraordinary luminous properties, visible under ultraviolet light. Partially colored, the pieces illuminate under UV light, creating lively, captivating lighting effects.
The nudibranch, at the center of the aquatic scene, is a shell-less sea slug renowned for its eccentric shapes and vivid hues. These bright colors have a defensive role: they warn predators of the animal's toxicity. In fact, nudibranchs secrete powerful toxins that deter attacks. Even more astonishing is their ability to recycle their prey's defenses. When they eat sea anemones, they store their stinging cells for reuse in case of danger. This mechanism enables them to repel any fish attempting to swallow them.
Nudibranchs are also simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning they are both male and female. During mating, each individual can fertilize the other. Their eggs take on the appearance of flowers or colorful garlands. The larvae, initially planktonic, have a tiny shell which they lose as they grow and become benthic.
On the front of the piece, a wide band reminiscent of an antique porthole frames the nudibranch. The upper part of the coin bears the name of the animal in German, "NACKTKIEMERSCHNECKE", and the year "2025".
The reverse, common to the entire series, depicts the twelve marine creatures chosen: blue-ringed octopus, shark, mollusc, lophiiform fish, scleractinian coral, yellow ray, blue surgeon fish, dwarf cuttlefish, Antarctic krill, firefly squid, pelagic jellyfish and devil scorpionfish. The background is adorned with stylized motifs representing the underwater world, accompanied by the words "Republik Österreich" and the value "3 euro".
Each animal in this series has unique luminous characteristics. They all sparkle, change hue or glow when exposed to UV light, paying tribute to the incredible diversity and biological ingenuity of the underwater world.
