BU Slovakia 2025 set - 700 years since the introduction of the gold florin in Slovakia
Description:
In the XIVᵉ century, a large part of present-day Slovakia belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely here, in towns like Kremnica, that the main gold mines were exploited and the first Hungarian florins were minted from 1325 onwards.
The Kremnica mint, still active today, played a central role in this history. For centuries, it produced gold florins, which were distributed far beyond the kingdom's borders. These coins, renowned for their quality and stability, contributed to the economic and commercial renown of the region.
So, although the florin is historically associated with Hungary, its geographical and technical roots lie in present-day Slovakia. So it's only natural that the country should choose to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the guilder in 2025, in order to highlight its mining, monetary and cultural heritage.
